Mexican President Obrador's statement on Trump: Will border wall construction continue?
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he does not believe former US President Donald Trump will continue building the wall on the border if he is re-elected.
Speaking to the "60 Minutes" program broadcast in the US, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador stated that the solution to the migration chaos does not lie in building a wall, saying, "I don't think Trump will continue building the wall if he returns to the White House."
Noting that they worked well with Trump, Lopez Obrador said, "The wall is useless. If the US wants to solve the migration problem, it needs Mexico. Trump and I understood each other very well. We signed a trade agreement that would benefit both peoples."
Reminding that Washington has pledged billions of dollars in aid to poor countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Lopez Obrador warned that if this is not implemented, the flow of migrants will continue to increase.
NEW MIGRATION STATEMENT
Emphasizing that approximately 250 thousand people crossed the southern border in December, Lopez Obrador stated, "I spoke with the presidents of Central America, and we also spoke with the heads of state of Venezuela and Cuba, and I requested their help to stop the flow of migrants. If we cannot find a solution to the migration flow in the short term, the arrival of new caravans is inevitable."
Touching on drug cartels in Mexico, Lopez Obrador said that he would not establish a "dialogue" with criminal organizations in any way and that they are fighting to ensure the requirements of the law are met.
In response to criticisms from the US regarding fentanyl, Lopez Obrador assessed, "I don't think the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has all the information on this matter. Because fentanyl is also produced in the US and Canada."
