Mexico rejects Ukraine's request regarding Putin

Ukraine has requested that Mexico arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of the country's new president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rejected Ukraine's request, stating, "We cannot do that. It is not up to us." Earlier this week, Sheinbaum's team sent a "diplomatic note" to all countries with which Mexico maintains diplomatic relations, including Russia, inviting them to attend the inauguration ceremony.

In a statement issued by the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico, it was recalled that there is an arrest warrant issued for Putin by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The statement expressed hope that "the Mexican government is aware that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal with an arrest warrant against him," adding that they were confident the Mexican government would comply.

The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin last year, accusing him of committing war crimes for the illegal deportation of hundreds of children from Ukraine to Russia. Russia is not a member of the ICC, but Mexico is.

In June, Putin congratulated Sheinbaum, an ally of Obrador, on her election victory, describing Mexico as "Russia's historically friendly partner in Latin America."
