Migrant chaos in Germany
Attitudes toward migrants in Germany are shifting. Millions of migrants living on social benefits and rising incidents of violence are creating unrest in society.
Germany has been struggling to cope with the influx of migrants since 2015, when then-Chancellor Angela Merkel opened the doors to Syrian refugees, declaring "We can do this." With the annual cost of social benefits in the country exceeding 50 billion Euros, "Welcome" banners have been replaced by calls for "reverse migration."
MIGRANTS AND SOCIAL TENSION
The presence of more than one million migrants of Syrian, Afghan, and Turkish origin in the country has led to the formation of "no-go zones" in cities. While incidents of violence against police and security forces are on the rise, knife attacks have also become more frequent. Many migrants who face language barriers continue to live on social benefits. This situation is causing discomfort, particularly among elderly Germans, and is leading to a hardening of views against migrants.
In a series of interviews broadcast on the German television channel SAT 1, the mistakes made since the Merkel era were discussed. It was emphasized that the cost of migration policies is high and that the "welcome culture" has been replaced by "reverse migration" campaigns.
REASSESSMENT OF POLICIES
Among the mistakes Germany has made in its migration policies are the negotiations for the Readmission Agreement with Turkey, the inadequacy of border controls, and the failure to take sufficient measures against violent refugees. Furthermore, the provision of unconditional social benefits to refugees is also among the criticized issues.
The program stated that support should be provided to migrants who integrate, but that legal measures must be taken against those who resort to violence and fail to integrate. It was expressed that Germany's migration policies need to be reassessed and that steps must be taken to ensure social peace.
