NATO calls on Ukraine to 'be prepared for bad news'

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the Western military alliance must be prepared for 'bad news' that may come from the front regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Speaking to the German broadcaster ARD, Stoltenberg said that wars develop in phases, stating, "We must support Ukraine in both good and bad times."

While Ukraine has not made much progress in the offensive it launched against the Russian army during the summer months, Stoltenberg said, "We must also be prepared for bad news," but did not provide details.

These statements by the NATO Secretary General came at a time when Western allies are debating ammunition and financial aid to Ukraine and Moscow is increasing its troop numbers. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Friday to increase the number of troops by 170 thousand, bringing the total to 1.3 million.

Arguing that Ukraine has achieved great victories even if it has not made progress on the front, Stoltenberg complained about the fragmented state of the European defense industry and called on NATO members to increase ammunition production.

Stating that "we cannot work as closely as we need to," Stoltenberg called on governments to look beyond their national interests and see the big picture.

Stoltenberg said that a victory for Putin would not only be a tragedy for Ukraine, but would also pose a danger to other allies.
