New cabinet in France announced 2 months after elections

Alexis Kohler, Secretary-General of the Elysee Palace, announced the new cabinet at the presidential residence nearly two months after the snap general elections.

Accordingly, Bruno Retailleau, head of the center-right Republicans (LR) group in the Senate, was appointed Minister of the Interior, while Jean-Noel Barrot from the MoDem party, a government partner, was appointed Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.

33-year-old Antoine Armand was appointed Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, a role that will be influential on the country's 2025 budget. Former leftist MP Didier Migaud was chosen as Minister of Justice and will serve as the only leftist politician in the government.

Astrid Panosyan-Bouvet, an MP from the ruling Ensemble Pour la République party, was appointed Minister of Labour and Employment, and Catherine Vautrin was appointed Minister of Partnership with the Territories.

LR member Annie Genevard was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, while Anne Genetet from Macron's party took over the Ministry of Education.

Genevieve Darrieussecq was appointed Minister of Health, Valerie Letard from the center-right Union of Democrats and Independents was appointed Minister of Housing and Urban Renewal, and Senate Law Committee Chairman François-Noel Buffet was appointed Minister for Overseas Territories.

Former Minister of Agriculture Agnes Pannier-Runacher also took part in the new cabinet as Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy.

Ministers continuing in their roles include Minister of Culture Rachida Dati and Minister of Defense Sebastien Lecornu.

Former Minister of Housing Guillaume Kasbarian was chosen as Minister of Public Service in the new cabinet. Maud Bregeon was appointed as the Government Spokesperson.

The cabinet also includes Minister of Higher Education and Research Patrick Hetzel; Minister of Solidarity, Autonomy and Equality between Women and Men Paul Christophe; Minister of Sports and Youth Gil Averous; Minister of Budget and Public Accounts Laurent Saint-Martin; Minister for Europe Benjamin Haddad; Minister for Relations with Parliament Nathalie Delattre; Minister for Government Coordination Marie-Claire Carrere-Gee; Minister for Rural Affairs, Commerce and Crafts Françoise Gatel and Minister for Transport François Durovray.

Other names who will serve in the government are as follows:

The new government, which the French public has been waiting for for nearly two months, consists of 20 women and 19 men. The first Council of Ministers meeting will be held at the Elysee Palace on September 23 at 15:00.

OPPOSITION REACTS

Lucie Castets, the prime ministerial candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP), the leftist and environmentalist alliance that won the snap general elections, stated in a post on her X account, "We were promised a consensus government, but what we have is a hard-right government." Castets stated that democracy in France was humiliated this evening.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, founder of the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) party, also shared on his X account, "The actors of the new disaster movie of the Macron regime have been revealed."

Melenchon expressed his doubts about the legitimacy and future of the government, criticized the new Interior Minister Retailleau, and assessed that "We must get rid of this (government) as soon as possible."

Far-right National Rally (RN) leader Jordan Bardella, in a statement on his X account, noted that with the new government, Macron's supporters have returned to power.

Bardella stated that this group, which the French people have rejected twice, cannot return to power through political maneuvering and that this government has no future.
