New dismissal in South Korea's martial law investigation!
General Park An-su, the Chief of Staff who was appointed as "martial law commander" during the failed declaration of martial law in South Korea on December 3, has been dismissed.
According to reports from the South Korean agency Yonhap, the Ministry of Defense announced that Park An-su has been dismissed from his post.
Park had been appointed as "martial law commander" by President Yoon Suk Yeol during the declaration of martial law.
Shortly after the declaration of martial law, the martial law order, which banned all political activities in the country, was issued under Park's signature.
In his testimony to the parliament, Park argued that he learned of the martial law declaration through the statement President Yoon made on television and that he did not prepare the martial law order himself.
The former Chief of Staff stated that he had submitted his resignation to Kim Yong-hyun, who was the Minister of Defense at the time, following the lifting of martial law, but that he continued his duty after President Yoon rejected it.
6 COMMANDERS HAD BEEN DISMISSED
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned on December 5 following the failed martial law declaration. Former minister Kim, who is alleged to have proposed the martial law declaration to President Yoon, was arrested and sent to prison on charges of "aiding in the initiation of an insurrection."
Before Park, 6 high-ranking military officers, including the Capital Defense Commander, the Special Warfare Commander, the Defense Intelligence Commander, and the Defense Counterintelligence Commander, had been dismissed due to the martial law declaration.
MARTIAL LAW DECLARATION IN SOUTH KOREA
In a speech he made on a television channel on the night of December 3, Yoon declared martial law on the grounds that "the opposition is involved in anti-state activities," but took a step back after the parliament voted to lift the decision and it was approved by the Cabinet.
Accusing the opposition of "preventing the government from performing its functions," Yoon argued that martial law was "aimed at eliminating pro-North Korean forces and protecting the constitutional order of freedom."
Following the declaration of martial law, the Ministry of Defense had instructed commanders in the army to hold a meeting and called for them to be on alert. On the other hand, it was reported that soldiers assigned as "martial law troops" had entered the National Assembly.
In the emergency session held at the National Assembly, the motion regarding the lifting of the martial law decision was accepted with the votes of 190 lawmakers. The National Assembly Speaker's Office announced that martial law had become "null and void" following the vote.
Upon this, Yoon, who convened the Cabinet, announced that he had ended martial law with the approval of the cabinet.
While Yoon was identified as a "suspect" in the investigation conducted by the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office on suspicion of "treason," "attempted armed insurrection," and "misconduct in office," a travel ban was imposed on him.
The South Korean National Assembly accepted a resolution on December 10 that included the "immediate detention" of 8 people, including President Yoon, due to the declaration of martial law.
