New fire breaks out in Los Angeles ahead of expected Trump visit
As U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to visit the state of California, where efforts to combat wildfires are ongoing, it has been reported that a new fire has broken out in the city of Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, where Trump announced he would visit on Friday, officials announced that a new fire has broken out around Castaic Lake and that partial evacuations have begun.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection shared information that the fire, which started this morning, covers an area of 500 acres.
Stating that a decision was made to evacuate an elementary school and a prison in the area due to the fire, local officials said that some highways in the region have also been temporarily closed to traffic.
In a statement from the National Weather Service, it was noted that while rain is expected in the region over the weekend, it will not be enough to extinguish the ongoing fires, and there is also a low risk of landslides.
According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as of today, 68 percent of the fire in the Palisades area—one of the fires that began in 6 separate regions in Los Angeles more than two weeks ago—has been contained, while 91 percent of the fire in Eaton has been contained.
President Donald Trump stated in an announcement on January 19 that his first visit after returning to the White House would be to Southern California, which has been affected by historic wildfires, on January 24.
