New messages from Trump to China after imposing 125 percent tariffs
US President Donald Trump sent new messages to China, where he has raised the total customs tariff rate to 125 percent, stating, "They want to make a deal, but they don't quite know how to do it, but they will figure it out in the process of solving it."
US President Trump made new assessments regarding the customs tariffs that have set the world's agenda during an event held in the White House garden.
Trump said that their doors are open to everyone who wants to make a deal with them and that they can make customs and trade agreements with anyone as long as it is fair, but that countries like China that retaliate are doing the wrong thing.
The US President said, "Chinese President Xi is a proud man. I know him very well. They want to make a deal, but they don't quite know how to do it, but they will figure it out in the process of solving it."
Arguing that China is the country that has abused the current global trade system the most in history, Trump said, "Someone had to do what I did. They had to stop them because this was not sustainable."
Stating that many countries, including China, want to make a customs agreement with the US, Trump said, "Nothing is over yet, there is tremendous demand from many countries, including China. China also wants to make a deal. We can also make a deal with the EU on customs; we can make a deal with anyone as long as it is fair."
Stating that they have imposed a 90-day pause for countries that do not retaliate against the US, Trump said, "We have imposed a 90-day pause on countries that do not retaliate against us. There are many countries that want to come here and conduct customs negotiations."
"PEOPLE WERE A LITTLE EXCITED AND SCARED"
When asked why the customs tariff application was suspended for 90 days for about 75 countries, Trump replied, "People were getting a little out of line, they were a little excited and scared because there is a big job we have to do."
However, stating that they can no longer turn a blind eye to what China has done in the international trade order and that this is why they took this step, Trump reiterated that they are ready to make a deal with everyone, including China, provided it is fair.
TRUMP RAISED CUSTOMS TARIFFS TO BE APPLIED TO CHINA TO 125 PERCENT
US President Trump announced in a statement on his Truth Social account today that he has raised the customs tax applied to Chinese-origin products to 125 percent, effective immediately.
Trump had stated, "I hope China soon understands that the era of exploiting the US and other countries is no longer acceptable."
Noting that representatives from more than 75 countries have called the US to negotiate a solution regarding customs tariffs, Trump had announced that he has suspended additional tariffs for 90 days as a gesture of goodwill to these countries that do not retaliate against the US, and that during this period, the mutual tariff rate will be applied at the lower limit of 10 percent.
