New wave of conflict in Iran
Military tensions between the US and Iran have flared up again following explosions in the western regions of Iran. The retaliatory attacks by both countries have damaged hopes for peace in the region.
On Tuesday afternoon, a series of explosions were heard in western Iran, in the vicinity of Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, and Choghadak. While Iranian media stated that the responsibility for these explosions has not yet been clarified, the developments have increased tension in the country.
It was reported that US warplanes targeted the Sadra Complex in Bushehr province, the Bushehr Air Base, and the town of Hormuz. Local officials announced that these attacks took place about an hour ago and that similar attacks were carried out in the cities of Abadan and Bandar Mahshahr.
While Iranian officials have not yet shared clear information regarding the background of the attacks, it was reported that security measures in the region have been increased.
RETALIATORY OPERATIONS
The Iranian side, for its part, targeted two tankers associated with the United Arab Emirates passing through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as locations in Bahrain and Jordan where US military assets are stationed. Following the sounds of explosions heard near the capital Manama in Bahrain, official authorities accused Iran of endangering the safety of civilians and reported that some of the attacks had been thwarted. Jordan announced that four missiles directed at the country were successfully destroyed in the air.
NEW UNCERTAINTY IN THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ
The increased military activity in the region has negatively affected maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and hopes for the agreement reached between the parties in previous months. As is known, Iran had effectively closed the strait in the last four months, while the US had imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ships.
The current spiral of violence has caused diplomatic initiatives for the normalization of maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz to be interrupted. While the memorandum signed between the parties has been suspended due to the increasing clashes, concerns regarding international trade flows have also been brought back to the agenda.
