New wave of sanctions from the European Union against Russia

The European Union (EU) has approved its 17th package of sanctions against Russia. This new wave of sanctions targets approximately 200 ships used by Russia for oil transport.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced that the new sanctions had been approved in a statement made via social media following a meeting of foreign ministers held in Brussels.

Kallas stated, "Ships in Russia's shadow fleet have been blacklisted. We are also working on new measures against hybrid threats."

Stating that tougher sanctions would be on the agenda if Russia prolongs the war, Kallas noted that the details of the new sanctions have not yet been fully disclosed.

THE EU'S GROWING SANCTIONS LIST

The EU's sanctions list will also include a number of individuals and companies in third countries that are alleged to be supplying materials to the Russian defense industry.

In its previous 16 sanctions packages against Russia, the EU had imposed restrictions in many areas such as trade, finance, energy, and technology. Within this scope, the maritime transport of oil from Russia was banned, some Russian banks were removed from the SWIFT system, and the operations of various media outlets were suspended.

There are currently more than 2 thousand individuals and entities on the EU's sanctions list.
