New York administration accuses social media giants of damaging youth mental health!

Several organizations representing the New York city administration have filed a lawsuit against social media platforms such as Meta, TikTok, Snap, and Google, alleging that they negatively impact the mental health of young people.

New York Mayor Eric Adams, with the support of New York's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Education, claimed that social media platforms make young people addicted to their applications and encourage them to spend more time in online environments.

Mayor Adams stated that in addition to the lawsuit, they will present a "social media action plan" that will hold these platforms accountable for harming children's mental health, educate families on the safe use of social media, and examine the impact of social media on youth.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said, "We provide 30 programs and features for users and their families to ensure young people have a safe and age-appropriate online experience."

A TikTok spokesperson stated that their application offers features to protect the health of young people, such as age-restricted content, parental controls, and a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users under 18.

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda said they are working in collaboration with mental health experts and are building services that provide age-appropriate experiences for young people and tools for parents to monitor their children's experiences. Castaneda argued that the allegations made by the organizations representing the New York administration do not reflect the truth.
