New York Stock Exchange closes higher
At the close, the Dow Jones index rose 0.17 percent to 39,872.99 points. The S&P 500 index increased by 0.25 percent to 5,321.41 points, and the Nasdaq index gained 0.22 percent to reach 16,832.62 points. Both indices renewed their closing records.
A positive trend was observed in equity markets as investors awaited further clues regarding the US Federal Reserve's (Fed) future monetary policy.
Analysts noted that while optimism persists regarding the Fed's first interest rate cut this year, the continued emphasis by bank officials that there is no need to rush such a cut is complicating pricing.
Stating that the verbal guidance from bank officials, which is expected to continue throughout the week, will be monitored, analysts reported that clues regarding the Fed's future monetary policy will be sought in the minutes of the bank's last meeting, which will be published tomorrow.
Analysts explained that the financial results to be announced tomorrow by chip company Nvidia are also in the focus of investors.
Fed Board of Governors member Christopher Waller stated, "The data shows that inflation is not accelerating, and I believe that further increases in the policy rate are likely unnecessary."
Emphasizing that he needs to see a few more months of good inflation data to comfortably support loosening the monetary policy stance, Waller noted that if the data provides assurance, they could consider an interest rate cut at the end of this year.
Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Michael Barr stated that there is still work to be done regarding inflation, noting that it will be necessary to keep monetary policy tight for longer than previously thought.
Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic also explained that he is in no rush to lower interest rates and would prefer to wait longer to be sure that inflation will not start to rise again.
Expressing that he expects inflation to fall relatively slowly and that he does not foresee an interest rate cut before the fourth quarter, Bostic pointed out that the Fed should be cautious regarding its first interest rate move.
