New York Times writer forced to resign over support for Palestine

In a report by The New York Times, it was stated that Hughes, who worked as a writer for the newspaper's Sunday edition, The New York Times Magazine, "resigned after violating editorial policies by signing a statement supporting Palestinians and protesting Israel's siege of Gaza."

"WE CONCLUDED THAT SHE SHOULD RESIGN"

The report included a statement from the magazine's editor, Jake Silverstein, who argued that Hughes's signing of a public statement violated editorial policy: "We spoke with her about how her desire to take such sides and participate in public protests is incompatible with being a journalist at The New York Times, and we both concluded that she should resign."

NO COMMENT ON THE MATTER

The report noted that Hughes had signed a statement by a group called "Writers Against the War on Gaza," which "condemned Israel's extermination attacks against Palestinians and the deaths of journalists in the region," and added that Hughes declined to comment on the matter.

Jamie Lauren Keiles, another contributor to the magazine and a signatory of the statement, had also announced on November 3 via the social media platform X that they were leaving the magazine for "personal reasons."
