Nuclear message from Russia: We will respond if our territory is threatened
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that the use of nuclear weapons could be on the table in the event of an attack on his country's territorial integrity, warning, "Do not try to test Russia on this matter."
Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov made statements to journalists regarding the possibility and conditions for Russia's use of nuclear weapons. Pointing out that the Russian military doctrine contains clear rules for such situations, Ryabkov stated that the nuclear weapon option is on the table if his country's territorial integrity is violated.
In his explanation regarding how a response would be given in the event of a potential attack, Ryabkov said, "In the worst-case scenario, if aggressors, including those who do not possess such weapons, attempt to violate Russia's territorial integrity, this could lead to us responding with nuclear weapons."
Continuing his statement, Ryabkov emphasized that the threats being experienced should be taken seriously, and used the following words to ensure the matter is not underestimated: "Do not try to test Russia on whether it is determined regarding this."
Furthermore, while stating that there is currently no need for Russia's proposal regarding the removal of enriched uranium produced in Iran, Ryabkov expressed that he expects this issue to come back to the agenda in the future process.
