Number of people injured in heavy snowfall rises to 240
Heavy snowfall has negatively impacted life in the capital Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures of Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba. The number of people injured due to the heavy snowfall in and around Tokyo has risen to 240.
According to reports in the national press, 140 people aged between 4 and 92 were taken to hospitals with various injuries in Tokyo, where pedestrians have been struggling to walk.
In Saitama, northwest of the capital, 70 people were injured, while 30 people were injured in various ways in Kanagawa, to the southeast.
Transportation was disrupted on the Tomei and Metropolitan expressways, where the snowfall was effective and icing occurred.
Temporary power outages occurred in over 14 thousand homes in prefectures along the east coast, including Tokyo.
SNOW DEPTH REACHED 8 CENTIMETERS IN TOKYO
Nearly 30 domestic flights departing from or arriving in Tokyo, operated by All Nippon Airways (ANA) and Japan Airlines (JAL), were canceled.
While some train services operated by East Japan Railway were temporarily suspended, it was reported that some services experienced delays of nearly 10 hours.
It was reported that nearly 1,600 passengers spent the night in train cars, and the temporary suspensions in train services negatively affected nearly 190 thousand passengers in total.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) lifted the heavy snowfall warnings it had issued the previous day for 9 prefectures across the region, including Tokyo, in its latest advisory.
The JMA announced that the snow depth reached 8 centimeters within Tokyo. According to the agency, the snow depth in the capital Tokyo had last reached 1 centimeter in February 2022.
