A notable increase in unemployment benefit claims was observed in the United States for the week ending May 9. According to the latest data, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time increased by 12,000 compared to the previous week, reaching a total of 211,000.
Analysts had projected that the number of applications for this period would be approximately 205,000. However, the announced figure surpassed market expectations. The data for the previous week was revised downward from 200,000 to 199,000.
In the week of May 9, the four-week moving average of unemployment benefit claims also showed a slight increase, rising to 203,750. This figure represents an increase of 750 people compared to the previous week.
During the same period, there was also an increase in the total number of people continuing to receive unemployment benefits. In the week ending May 2, continuing claims rose by 24,000 to 1 million 782 thousand.
