Pellegrini wins Slovak presidential election according to unofficial results

In the country with approximately 4.3 million voters, Parliament Speaker Peter Pellegrini and former diplomat Ivan Korčok, who advanced to the second round of the presidential election held on March 24, competed to become Slovakia's new president.

According to unofficial results shared by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, Pellegrini became the winner of the election by receiving 53.24 percent of the votes.

In the election, where approximately 60 percent of voters went to the polls, former diplomat Korčok received 46.76 percent of the votes.

According to these results, Pellegrini, who was supported by Prime Minister Fico, has been elected to the 5-year presidential term.

Korčok accepted the defeat and congratulated the winner of the election, Pellegrini.

Current President Zuzana Čaputová also called Pellegrini to congratulate him on his election victory.

Meanwhile, Čaputová will hand over her duties on June 15.

Experts share the view that Pellegrini has similar thoughts to Prime Minister Fico regarding the war in Ukraine, and that Fico's hand has been further strengthened by his election as president.
