Pope Francis on the US elections: The lesser of two evils must be chosen
Pope Francis made statements to journalists on the plane after completing his tour of Southeast Asia. Criticizing Kamala Harris' defense of abortion and Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies regarding the US elections, Pope Francis stated that US Catholics will have to choose the "lesser evil" in the elections.
The spiritual leader of Catholics and Head of the Vatican State, Pope Francis, answered journalists' questions on the plane after completing his 12-day tour of Southeast Asia.
He criticized the events in Gaza. He described Israel's targeting of schools in Gaza and the deaths of children as terrible. "Seeing the bodies of children killed, hearing that a school has been bombed, is a terrible thing," he said. Speaking about a possible ceasefire in the region, the Pope argued that the necessary steps have not been taken.
"Sometimes it is said that this is a war of defense or not, but I believe that this war is too much," the Pope said, adding, "I am sorry to have to say this, but I do not think the parties are taking steps to make peace."
HE CRITICIZED BOTH NAMES
Pope Francis also answered questions about the upcoming US Presidential elections. He criticized Kamala Harris' defense of abortion and Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies.
The Pope said that not welcoming immigrants is a "grave" sin, and that having an abortion is like "assassination."
Stating that both policies are against the right to life, the Pope said that US Catholics who will vote in November will have to choose the "lesser evil."
The Pope, who said he wants to visit China and the Canary Islands, announced that he will not attend the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which was heavily damaged in a fire in 2019 and will reopen on December 8.
