Pope proposes 'two-state solution' for Israel-Palestine conflict

In an interview with the Italian state broadcaster Rai1, the Pope answered questions regarding prominent issues on the agenda.

''THIS WAR AFFECTS US''

Pointing out his concern over the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East on a global scale, the Pope said, "This war affects us because it involves Israel, Palestine, the holy land, and Jerusalem; perhaps Ukraine does too, because it is close to us. But there are many other wars that do not affect us, such as Kivu, Yemen, and Myanmar with the Rohingya, who are martyrs. The world is at war, but behind it is the arms industry."

EMPHASIS ON 'TWO PEOPLES, TWO STATES'

Emphasizing that every war is a defeat and that people should not get used to wars, the Pope stated, "Nothing is solved by war. Everything is gained through peace and dialogue. There are two peoples who must live together. With this wise solution: two peoples, two states. The Oslo Accords, two states with defined borders and Jerusalem with a special status."

Regarding the role of women, which is one of the topics discussed in the Church, the Pope stated that women will take on more roles, but there is a theological issue regarding their roles in religious ceremonies.

Pope Francis, who is known for his interest in football and is originally from Argentina, responded to the question of whether he prefers Diego Armando Maradona or Lionel Messi by saying, "I will name a third: Pele."
