President Erdoğan and Donald Trump hold phone call: Message of cooperation on Ukraine and Syria

It was noted that Trump and Erdoğan discussed regional issues during their phone call. The two leaders were said to have exchanged views on Ukraine and Syria during the conversation.

In addition to peace talks in Ukraine and the situation in Syria, it was stated that the two leaders also addressed global issues. During the call, Erdoğan emphasized his full belief that Turkey and the US, as two allies, will advance their cooperation in the new era in a spirit of solidarity, result-oriented, and sincere manner.

The Presidency's Directorate of Communications shared details regarding the call. According to the statement, Erdoğan emphasized that regional and global developments make it necessary to increase consultations between Turkey and the US on all matters.

ERDOĞAN'S SUPPORT FOR TRUMP

Underlining that he supports Trump's decisive and direct initiatives to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, Erdoğan noted that Turkey has been striving for a fair and lasting peace since the very beginning of the war and will continue to do so.

According to the statement from the Directorate of Communications, Erdoğan expressed during the call that it is important for them to contribute together to restoring stability in Syria, making the new administration functional, and lifting sanctions on Syria for normalization. Erdoğan pointed out that this would enable Syrians to return to their homelands.

WILL CAATSA SANCTIONS BE ENDED?

Erdoğan said that in the new era, steps are expected from the US regarding the fight against terrorism with an understanding that respects Turkey's interests. Requesting the termination of CAATSA sanctions to improve cooperation between the two countries in the defense industry, Erdoğan conveyed that it is necessary to conclude the F-16 procurement process and finalize Turkey's re-participation in the F-35 program.

CAATSA (Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act) was known as a law that mandates the US to impose sanctions against its adversaries. The law went into effect in 2017. CAATSA included economic and political sanctions against countries such as Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

The law allows the US to impose sanctions on countries that act against its interests. Turkey was subjected to sanctions under CAATSA for purchasing the S-400 air defense system from Russia.
