Prisoners escape after attack on barracks

A nationwide curfew has been declared in the West African country of Sierra Leone after a group of armed individuals attacked a military barracks. Following the attack on the Wilberforce military barracks in Freetown, it was reported that a large number of prisoners escaped from the prison in the capital. 

After the armed group entered the Pademba Prison in the capital Freetown, the prisoners were set free. In footage shared on social media, many prisoners were seen walking out of the prison.

MAADA BIO: WE WILL CONTINUE TO PROTECT PEACE

 Speaking about the attack on the Wilberforce military barracks in Freetown, President Julius Maada Bio had called on citizens to stay indoors. Bio stated, "The peace of our beloved country is priceless. We will continue to protect the peace and security of Sierra Leone against forces that desire to undermine our stability."

CONDEMNATION FROM ECOWAS

Meanwhile, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) condemned the attack on the barracks in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. In a written statement issued by ECOWAS, it was stated that they had learned of the horrific plans of armed individuals to disrupt peace and constitutional order in Sierra Leone. The statement, which condemned the attack, noted that everyone involved in this illegal act must be arrested and prosecuted.

Pointing out that ECOWAS reiterated its zero-tolerance policy for unconstitutional changes of government, the statement said, "ECOWAS also underscores its commitment to supporting the government and people of Sierra Leone in deepening democracy and good governance, consolidating peace and security, and promoting socio-economic development." 

In August, a large number of people, including high-ranking soldiers, were detained in Sierra Leone on charges of "undermining the peace and security of the country." Tensions have been high in the country since President Bio was re-elected for a second term in the elections held on June 24. Bio had accused Western countries of trying to create unrest in Sierra Leone.
