Public flocks to free supermarket

The free supermarket, which opened for a short time in Manhattan's West Village neighborhood, offered an unusual experience in a New York under the pressure of high living costs. The market, which was announced to serve for only two days, caused more than 400 people to gather hours before its 14:00 opening time. Many citizens struggling to find solutions to rising prices formed queues stretching for meters in front of the market. Customers who entered filled their blue bags with many products, from fresh fruits and vegetables to basic food supplies, personal care items, and various necessities, without paying any fees. The practice, which had no shopping limits or spending requirements, was completely free, unlike other campaigns and discounts.

It did not go unnoticed that the period when the market opened coincided with a time when the increase in supermarket prices across the city was being debated. According to recent audits conducted in New York State, food prices in the city have increased by over 65 percent between 2012 and 2023. Furthermore, it was announced that one in every nine households in the city experienced food insecurity between 2020 and 2022, and that most of these families were located in different parts of the city.

The company that established this special market announced that it had made a 1 million dollar donation to the Food Bank For New York City to support the fight against food insecurity.
