Putin's statement on World War II

An opening ceremony was held for a monument in Russia's Leningrad region dedicated to the memory of Soviet civilians who were victims of Nazi genocide during World War II.

The ceremony was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

In his speech at the event, Putin stated that the Soviet army lifted the Siege of Leningrad on January 27, 1944.

Emphasizing that the Siege of Leningrad was an unprecedented event in terms of its cruelty, Putin said, "More than a million Leningrad residents fell victim to hunger, cold, and endless attacks. These figures were uncovered through research by historians and scientists and were proven in court with documents. Work will continue to investigate other crimes committed by the Nazis against our country's civilian population during the war."

Stating that history is being rewritten and altered in some countries, and that Nazi ideology is being adopted and its methods applied, Putin noted that this is also happening in Ukraine.

Pointing out that civilians continue to die in attacks, Putin remarked, "We will do everything in our power to stop and completely eradicate Nazism."
