Recognized the State of Palestine last year: Spain moves for an arms embargo on Israel

The Spanish Parliament has agreed to discuss a legislative proposal submitted by the left-wing parties Sumar and Podemos, along with the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), which includes the implementation of an embargo on the trade of arms and military equipment with Israel.

While this proposal was supported by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and the Together for Catalonia (JUNTS) party, it was rejected by the People's Party (PP), Vox, and the Navarrese People's Union (UPN).

RECOGNIZED THE STATE OF PALESTINE LAST YEAR

Having recognized the State of Palestine last year and halted arms sales to Israel in 2023, Spain aims to further tighten its policies toward Israel with this move. This development comes after a majority of EU foreign ministers, gathered in Brussels, Belgium, supported a review of the Association Agreement with Israel.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated at a press conference in Madrid that Israel should be excluded from international cultural events such as Eurovision. This statement further clarified Spain's stance against Israel.
