Record number of citizenships granted in Germany in 2024
In 2024, 291,955 people were granted German citizenship. While Syrians formed the largest group, the number of Turks doubled compared to the previous year, rising to 22,525. New, more accessible regulations that came into effect were a key factor in this record increase.
Germany's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has shared the number of people granted German citizenship in 2024 with the public. According to the statement, the applications of 291,955 people for German citizenship were approved last year.
Compared to 2023, the number of people granted German citizenship increased by 46 percent last year.
According to the data, Syrians were the group most frequently granted German citizenship. Those of Syrian origin accounted for more than a quarter, or 28 percent, of those granted German citizenship. According to the data, 83,150 Syrians became German citizens last year.

NUMBER OF TURKS DOUBLED
While 11,790 Turks obtained German citizenship in 2023, this number reached 22,525 in 2024. The number of Turks who obtained German citizenship last year doubled.
Additionally, 12,980 Russians obtained German citizenship in 2024.
In 2024, those who obtained German citizenship by taking advantage of the fast-track citizenship opportunity provided to those who integrate quickly and show outstanding achievement accounted for 7 percent of all naturalizations. The average length of residence in Germany for those who obtained German citizenship in 2024 was 11 years and 8 months. The average length of residence in Germany for those of Turkish origin at the time they were granted German citizenship was recorded as 23 years and 1 month.
The record number of naturalizations is attributed to the regulation that came into effect on June 27, 2024, which simplified the process of obtaining German citizenship.
