Russia alarm in the EU: Offices searched

European Parliament (EP) offices were searched on the grounds that an employee attempted to interfere in the upcoming June 6-9 EP elections in favor of Russia

According to a written statement from the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office, within the framework of a case launched in April 2024, the Brussels Federal Judicial Police, under the order of the Brussels Court Investigating Magistrate, searched the home of an EP employee in the Schaerbeek district and their office at the EP.

Simultaneously, in close cooperation with Eurojust, the EU's agency for criminal justice cooperation, and French judicial authorities, the employee's office located in the EP building in Strasbourg was also searched.

The searches, conducted on suspicion of "foreign interference," "passive corruption," and "membership in a criminal organization," were prompted by allegations that the EP employee in question approached members of the European Parliament through a news site called "Voice of Europe" to promote Russian propaganda.

The European Commission had previously announced that measures were being taken against Russian interference, in particular, ahead of the EP elections to be held on June 6-9.
