Ground forces commander Aleksandr Pavlyuk said that Ukraine is planning to reorganize its troops and launch a new counter-offensive this year.
Speaking to the Russian news channel ICTV on Wednesday, Pavlyuk stated that Ukraine's most urgent goal is to stop Russia's advance and regroup its own units, so that exhausted Ukrainian forces can be withdrawn from the front line and reinforced. According to Pavlyuk, if Ukraine achieves this, it could then form an assault group and begin conducting counter-attacks.
Pavlyuk said, "I think we will stabilize the situation in a short time," and noted that the command is 'trying to do everything possible to prepare troops for more active actions and to seize the initiative.'
The Ukrainian army is retreating in Donbas, where Russian forces captured the heavily fortified city of Avdiivka last month. The territorial losses have occurred due to Kyiv's increasing ammunition shortages and delays in the delivery of military aid from the West.
