Scandalous circumcision proposal from far-right party: Banned for Muslims, permitted for Jews

Jimmie Akesson, leader of the Sweden Democrats (SD), announced that his party is completely opposed to circumcision procedures based on religious principles that lack a medical justification. However, Akesson argued that this ban should not include the Jewish community in Sweden. Speaking to a national magazine, Akesson stated that Jews have certain special rights in Sweden as a national minority. Akesson said, "I think such an exception can be made because Jews are a national minority with certain special rights. Muslims in Sweden do not have such a right."

The SD leader's proposal also caused a disagreement within the party. Richard Jomshof, one of the party's members of parliament, stated in a post on the US-based social media platform X that he did not agree with Akesson's approach. Emphasizing that religious rules should not take precedence over individual freedoms in a secular democracy, Jomshof stated, "After all, we live in a secular democracy."

Since 2019, the question of whether to ban the circumcision of male children without a medical reason has continued to be debated in Sweden. The latest developments have brought sensitivities regarding religious identity and minority rights in the country back to the agenda.
