Serbia heads to the polls for early general and local elections

Voting has begun in Serbia for early general and local elections.

The 6 million 500 thousand 165 registered voters are heading to the polls to determine the new members of the 250-seat National Assembly, the 120-seat assembly of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in the north of the country, and municipal assemblies in cities and districts across the country.

Voters will be able to cast their ballots at their registered polling stations between 07:00 and 20:00 local time.

Polling stations have been set up at 8 thousand 273 locations across the country, as well as at 81 polling stations in 35 countries abroad.

In the general election in Serbia, 2 thousand 817 candidates from 18 lists are competing.

Meanwhile, the election bans that began at midnight between Thursday and Friday will remain in effect until the voting process concludes.

The State Election Commission (RIK) is expected to announce the first unofficial results before midnight.

OPPOSITION HAD CALLED FOR ELECTIONS

Following the deaths of 18 people in two consecutive armed attacks in Serbia in May, the opposition had called for early general elections, and President Aleksandar Vucic responded to this call by announcing that early general and local elections would be held on Sunday, December 17.
