Serious accusation from Sudan against the UK

In a written statement, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the United Nations (UN) Security Council had organized a meeting to discuss Sudan's complaint against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over allegations of "multi-faceted sponsorship" of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The statement said, "The UK interfered in the country's internal affairs by changing the format and nature of the closed-door consultation session held at the Security Council, turning it into a meeting about the situation in Sudan in general and specifically in the El-Fasher region located in western Sudan."

The ministry's statement noted that it was regrettable that the UK, in exchange for its commercial interests with the UAE, had abandoned its moral and political duty as a permanent member of the Security Council and its obligation to address Sudan's problems within the Council.

The statement, which accused the British government of holding secret meetings with the RSF—which it described as "bearing all the characteristics of terrorist groups"—asserted that this makes the UK a partner in the responsibility for the atrocities committed by the RSF and its sponsor, and a supporter of their impunity.

ARMS EMBARGO REMINDED

The statement reported that the UN Security Council's closed-door session in question was held on the morning of April 29, and that members demanded that the RSF stop its attacks around El-Fasher and promise not to attack any cities.

The statement mentioned that council members called on regional parties to comply with the arms embargo imposed on Darfur in accordance with the council's 2005 Resolution 1591.

The statement further noted that the council members participating in the meeting also called for the resumption of the Jeddah negotiations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, the facilitation of unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and the necessity of respecting international humanitarian law, adding that no decision was reached at the meeting and that they settled for the statement issued on April 27.

On March 29, Sudan had filed a complaint with the UNSC alleging that the UAE was supporting the RSF, while the UAE had denied these allegations.

Sudan's representative to the United Nations (UN), Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss, also requested in a letter sent to the UN Security Council on April 27 that the council hold a session to discuss what he called the UAE's "fueling of the war" in his country by supporting the RSF, and announced that Khartoum rejects Abu Dhabi's participation in any solution to the Sudanese crisis.

ABOUT THE WAR IN SUDAN

The power struggle between the army and the RSF, who jointly staged a coup against the government formed with civilian participation following the overthrow of the 30-year Omar al-Bashir regime in a popular uprising, has been ongoing for 1 year.

In the war that began in mid-April 2023 and continues in 10 of Sudan's 18 states, the army controls the northern and eastern states, while the RSF has managed to seize the western and southern states.

The Jeddah talks mediated by Saudi Arabia and the US to end the war, the peace initiative for Sudan's neighboring countries led by Egypt, the efforts of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in East Africa, and the talks held in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, have all been inconclusive.

According to the UN, more than 15 thousand people have lost their lives, approximately 8.5 million people have been displaced, and more than 25 million people are in need of humanitarian aid as a result of the conflicts in Sudan, which is experiencing the world's largest displacement and hunger crisis.
