Laura Barajas, a 40-year-old living in the city of San Jose, California, in the USA, lost both her arms and legs after incorrectly cooking a fish she bought at a market.
The 40-year-old mother of one brought a tilapia fish she bought from a local market home and cooked it. However, this meal almost cost her her life. Because she did not cook the fish for long enough, the woman was rushed to the hospital shortly after her hands and feet began to turn black.
Tests conducted at the hospital revealed that she had developed sepsis, known as blood poisoning. Sepsis occurs when a microorganism causing an infection in the body enters the bloodstream. As the body fights against this, severe inflammation occurs.
The woman fought to survive in the hospital for months. She was placed on a ventilator and put into a medically induced coma. Ultimately, doctors had to amputate both her arms and legs to save her life.
THE INFECTION WAS CAUSED BY A DANGEROUS BACTERIUM
Doctors believe the infection was likely caused by a dangerous bacterium called "vibrio vulnificus."
According to the report in Sonhabereu, infectious disease expert Natasha Spottiswoode was quoted as saying, "You can get infected by consuming food contaminated with this bacterium or by exposing a cut or tattoo to water where the bacterium lives."
Spottiswoode stated, "People need to take smart precautions, such as avoiding exposing wounds to water until they are completely healed. It is important for those with weakened immune systems to avoid these risky foods and substances."
A close friend of the family has launched a fundraising campaign for Laura's husband and son, who are in a difficult situation.
