Snowstorm claims lives in the US: 13,000 flights canceled, nearly 1 million people left without power

Heavy snowfall and storms affecting many regions of the US have brought daily life to a standstill.

According to information in the national press, at least 13,000 flights have been canceled nationwide, while approximately 953,000 people in the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Georgia, West Virginia, and North Carolina have been affected by power outages. The US National Weather Service announced that meteorological warnings of varying levels are in effect, covering a total of 213 million people.

It was reported that snowfall reached significant levels in some regions. Snow depth reached 33 centimeters in Indiana, 30 centimeters in Missouri, and 28 centimeters in Ohio; while it reached 20 centimeters in Arkansas, Illinois, and Kansas, 18 centimeters in Oklahoma, 15 centimeters in Texas, and 13 centimeters in Tennessee. Disruptions in land transportation also occurred due to the heavy snow.

IN-PERSON EDUCATION SUSPENDED IN NEW YORK

Adverse weather conditions also affected New York, one of the country's largest cities. While it was stated that snow depth reached up to 24 centimeters in some areas, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that all public schools in the city would switch to remote learning on Monday.

5 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES

Announcing that 5 homeless individuals had lost their lives, Mamdani stated, "We do not know the exact causes of death for these individuals, but this situation reminds us how dangerous extreme cold can be, especially for our homeless neighbors."

STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN MANY STATES

In his assessment yesterday, US President Donald Trump described the storms affecting the country as "historic" and announced that a federal state of emergency had been declared in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Indiana. The US Department of Homeland Security announced that emergency measures have been implemented in 17 states, including the District of Columbia, which includes Washington D.C., due to weather conditions.
