Social media ban for under-15s in France passes Parliament: Accounts will be closed
A regulation aimed at increasing digital safety for children in France has passed Parliament. With the new law, social media access for those under 15 is restricted, and limitations are also being placed on mobile phone use in schools.
A comprehensive regulation banning social media use for children under 15 in France has been approved by the National Assembly. The bill includes provisions that not only restrict access to digital platforms but also limit the use of mobile phones in educational environments.
The regulation is expected to come to the Senate's agenda in mid-February. Following Senate approval and the completion of the necessary official processes, the new rules are planned to take effect as of the 2026 academic year. In this context, it is envisioned that social media accounts identified as belonging to individuals under 15 will be closed.
French President Emmanuel Macron also supported the decision in a post on social media, drawing attention to the importance of protecting children in the online environment.
THE AUSTRALIAN EXAMPLE
A similar practice was implemented in Australia last year. A social media ban for those under 16 came into effect on December 10, and it was announced that millions of accounts were closed, suspended, or had their access restricted in the first few days.
