Socialist Party wins EP elections in Portugal

While the far-right is on the rise in European Parliament (EP) elections in many European countries, the Portuguese leg of the elections was won by the Socialist Party (PS), which is currently the main opposition.

According to official results announced by the Portuguese Ministry of Internal Affairs, the PS received 32.4 percent of the vote, the center-right Democratic Alliance (AD), which is in power with a minority government, received 31.95 percent, the far-right Chega party received 9.89 percent, and the liberal Liberal Initiative (IL) received 8.51 percent, all of whom will send parliamentarians to the EP.

In the early general elections held in Portugal on March 10, the AD finished first with 28.85 percent of the vote, and after the PS, whose vote share fell from 41 percent to 28 percent, decided to remain in opposition, the AD formed a minority government on its own.

The EP elections showed that the PS has begun to rise again in a short period of time.

On the other hand, voter turnout in the country remained at 38 percent, similar to past EP elections.

Turnout for EP elections in Portugal was 30 percent in 2014 and 36 percent in 2019.
