South Korea heads to the polls for National Assembly elections

South Korea voters headed to the polls today to elect National Assembly members who will serve for a 4-year term.

In the country, which has a population of approximately 52 million, 44.3 million eligible voters cast their ballots at 14,259 polling stations starting at 06:00 local time.

According to reports in the South Korean press, voter turnout reached 66.3 percent as of 18:00 local time, with approximately 29.4 million people having cast their votes, including 14 million who voted early.

Voting concluded at 18:00. Official election results are expected to be finalized in the coming hours.

PARTIES COMPETE FOR 300 SEATS

In South Korea, where general elections are held every 4 years, there are a total of 300 seats in the National Assembly.

While the winners of 254 seats are determined by direct election based on votes cast nationwide, 46 assembly members are selected based on the parties' vote shares regardless of the region.

Polls predict that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's People Power Party will win 90 to 100 seats in the assembly, while the main opposition Democratic Party is expected to secure at least 110 seats.
