South Korea passes law: Ban on dog meat trade

A bill banning the trade and consumption of dog meat in South Korea has been approved by the National Assembly.

According to Yonhap news, the bill, which prohibits the breeding, slaughtering, distribution, and sale of dogs for their meat, was passed with 208 votes in favor and 2 abstentions.

Once the bill is enacted, it is planned to come into effect in 2027, and those who violate the law could face up to 2 years in prison or a fine of approximately 23 thousand dollars.

The bill also includes provisions for subsidies to help people working in the dog meat industry transition to other jobs.

According to government data, there are approximately 1,150 dog farms, 34 butchers, 219 distributors, and about 1,600 restaurants selling food made with dog meat in South Korea.

In a survey conducted in South Korea, more than 90 percent of participants stated that they would not consider eating dog meat.
