Spain cancels another major arms procurement deal with Israel

The Israeli press has reported that Spain, which has begun implementing an arms embargo on Israel due to the genocide in Gaza, canceled another major arms procurement deal with Israel worth 207 million euros last weekend.

It was noted that the third major arms procurement deal canceled this month involved Spain's purchase of advanced navigation and targeting systems worth 207 million euros for its Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. Under the agreement signed last year, the Israeli firm Rafael was expected to supply the Spanish Air Force with approximately 45 "Lightning V" pods, which are equipped with advanced sensors, cameras, and radars, as well as laser designators.

The Spanish government recently approved a Royal Decree banning the trade of all defense equipment and dual-use products and technologies with Israel. The arms embargo decree, which also prohibits the shipment of weapons to Israel via Spain, entered into force as of yesterday.

Last Monday, Spain also canceled a 700 million euro contract signed in 2023 to purchase PULS rockets from the Israeli company Elbit Systems. Earlier this month, the country also terminated an agreement regarding the purchase of Spike missiles from Rafael worth 237 million euros.

On the other hand, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Gaza, chose an unusual route while traveling to the US to attend the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly, avoiding Spanish airspace.
