Spain recalls its ambassador to Tel Aviv

The Spanish government has made a notable change in diplomatic relations in the region by deciding to withdraw its ambassador to Israel. Following this decision, the management of the Spanish mission in Tel Aviv has been temporarily transferred to a chargé d'affaires.

SPAIN'S CLEAR STANCE AGAINST THE WAR

The Madrid administration is among the leading countries that openly object to the military operations conducted by the US and Israel against Iran. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has frequently emphasized in his recent statements that he criticizes the stance of Israel and the US in terms of international law.

Spain reiterated its message that it would not allow its military bases to be used for actions in the Middle East, stating that current policies are contrary to international law.

TENSION BETWEEN WASHINGTON AND MADRID

US President Donald Trump opposed Spain's decision regarding the bases and spoke as follows:

“Spain said we couldn't use their bases, that's not true. We can use their bases if we want to. Nobody can tell us not to use the bases. Spain is in terrible shape right now.”

In response, Prime Minister Sanchez underscored Spain's foreign policy line and gave a clear answer:

“Spain's position is clear. It is the same as it is in Ukraine and Gaza. No to the violation of international law. Problems in the world cannot be solved just by dropping bombs. Mistakes of the past should not be repeated. The summary of our position is no to war.”
