State of emergency declared for the capture of prisoners extended

In a decree published following the Council of Ministers meeting, it was announced that the state of emergency has been extended for one month in order to "restore" public order.

Police, who have taken extensive security measures on the streets of the capital Port-au-Prince, are conducting raids on locations where gang members are located.

Gunshots were heard from many points in the city due to the clashes.

Meanwhile, the return date of Haitian Prime Minister Henry, who has been waiting in Puerto Rico since March 5 due to the ongoing gang violence in the country, has not yet been clarified.

Jimmy Cherizier, nicknamed "Barbecue," one of the gang leaders who led to the escape of thousands of prisoners from the prison, stated in his announcement yesterday that if Prime Minister Henry does not resign, "Haiti will be either a paradise for everyone or a hell for everyone."

Armed gangs demanding Henry's resignation carried out armed attacks on two prisons near the Port-au-Prince and Croix des Bouquets regions on March 2 and 3, clashing with security forces. During the clashes, approximately 4,000 prisoners escaped from prison, and 12 people lost their lives.

The government announced on March 4 that a 72-hour state of emergency had been declared to capture the criminals who escaped from prison and that a curfew would be implemented during certain hours.

Cherizier's gang had attempted to seize the airport in the capital many times to prevent Prime Minister Henry from returning to the country.

Henry was in Nairobi during the aforementioned gang attacks to evaluate the deployment of a Kenya-led multinational security force to Haiti.
