Statement on Iran deal from Trump's right-hand man

U.S. Vice President James David Vance made statements to the Fox News channel regarding the ongoing tension with Iran. Stating that "great progress was made" in the negotiations held in Pakistan, but that Iran left the table, Vance explained the reason for this as "the Iranian delegation there could not agree and needed to return to Tehran to get approval from the supreme leader or someone else regarding the U.S. terms."

When asked if there would be more negotiations, Vance stated that the ball is in Iran's court, assessing, "The most important question from here on out is whether the Iranians will be flexible enough and whether they will accept the critical points we need to see for things to get done." Regarding these critical points, Vance said, "We must remove enriched uranium from Iran. We must get their firm commitment that they will not develop nuclear weapons. If the Iranians are willing to meet us on that, this could be a very, very good deal for both countries."

Reiterating that the ball is in Iran's court from here on, Vance said, "Whether we have more talks or ultimately reach a deal, I think the ball is in Iran's court. Because we have put a lot on the table." Emphasizing that they have laid out their red lines very clearly, Vance said, "We have also made it very clear: We would be very happy if Iran were treated like a normal country, had a normal economy, and its people lived in prosperity and thrived. But for Iran to be a normal country economically, it also needs to be a normal country in terms of not pursuing nuclear weapons. It also needs to be a normal country in terms of not pursuing terrorism." Pointing out that a deal is possible despite all the negatives, Vance said, "A really big deal can be made here, but it is up to the Iranians to take the next step." Stating that Iran should open the Strait of Hormuz without wasting time, Vance assessed, "We have leverage, we have military superiority, and we are now applying additional economic pressure on them through the blockade we are enforcing on the oil coming out of the Strait of Hormuz."
