Strait of Hormuz tension suspends US-Iran contacts

Tensions between the US and Iran in the region continue to rise rapidly. According to information obtained, the talks, which were planned to resume in Switzerland over the weekend, have been suspended following recent events. In particular, mutual attacks on commercial vessels and military facilities have disrupted diplomatic steps between the two countries.

Within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed by US President Donald Trump at the beginning of June, Iran's obligation to keep the Strait of Hormuz open to international commercial transit was emphasized, and a certain consensus had been reached between the two countries. However, the attacks that have taken place in the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks have prevented the parties from reaching a new agreement.

US Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mike Waltz, in a statement to Fox News, said, "If Tehran threatens international maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, the US will continue to target Iran's military infrastructure."

While the Iranian side argues that the steps taken by the US constitute a violation of the agreement, the Washington administration claims that Tehran is not fulfilling its obligations. Most recently, Iran carried out an attack on a container ship and a tanker carrying oil from Qatar. In response, the US targeted Iran's communication infrastructure, unmanned aerial vehicles, and some missile bases.

Increasing mutual accusations and attacks indicate that tensions in the region will rise even further in the coming days. No official statement has been made regarding when the canceled negotiations in Switzerland will resume.
