Tensions at a peak: North Korean soldiers cross the border, South Korean military fires warning shots

Tensions between South Korea and North Korea, which have been escalating in recent days, have now spilled over to the border line.

In a statement from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), it was reported that approximately 20 North Korean soldiers crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Sunday at around 12:30 local time.

Following the development, it was stated that South Korean soldiers fired warning shots, and the North Korean soldiers retreated to their own country's border shortly thereafter.

"WE BELIEVE IT WAS A MISTAKE"

JCS spokesperson Colonel Lee Sung-jun, in his statement regarding the matter, noted that the DMZ is covered with grass and bushes, pointing out that it could be difficult to see the border markers for this reason.

Noting that the North Korean soldiers were working on an unknown task within the DMZ prior to the incident, Lee said it is assessed that the North Korean soldiers crossed the border by mistake.

TENSIONS HAD ESCALATED

North Korea sending over a thousand balloons carrying trash to South Korea's border regions had escalated tensions in the region, and the Seoul administration, in retaliation against Pyongyang, had completely suspended the military agreement signed with North Korea in 2018 aimed at reducing military tensions.

Most recently, it was reported that South Korea had reinstalled giant loudspeakers in the border region to broadcast propaganda toward North Korea.
