Tensions between Russia and Japan: This decision is unacceptable

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the entry of 13 Japanese citizens into Russia has been banned in retaliation for the sanctions imposed by Japan.

Among those placed on Russia's 'blacklist' are the names of RAKUTEN founder Hiroshi Mikitani, Toyota Motor CEO Akio Toyoda, and Japan International Cooperation Agency President Akihiko Tanaka.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated at his daily press conference that they consider Moscow's decision to impose sanctions on Japanese citizens to be "absolutely unacceptable" and that a protest note has been delivered to Russia.

Stating that "such measures restrict the legitimate activities of Japanese companies," Hayashi attempted to defend the sanctions imposed on Russia by citing their connection to the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine.

The official, who noted that a protest note had been sent to Russia, said, "We will continue to take all possible measures to protect our companies and commercial activities in Russia."

According to reports from Japanese media citing diplomatic sources, Tokyo fears that the sanctions implemented by Moscow are creating "psychological pressure" on local companies interested in Ukraine's reconstruction projects.

Since March 2022, Japan has imposed sanctions against 1,070 Russian citizens and 847 companies.
