Tensions remain high in neighboring Iran: Death toll exceeds 6,000, detentions approach 42,000

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) reported that the number of people who have lost their lives in the demonstrations that began following economic hardships in Iran has reached 6,126.

According to data shared by HRANA, a total of 41,880 people have been detained during the protests continuing in different regions of the country. In the incidents, 6,126 people, including 214 security personnel, have lost their lives. The agency had announced in a statement a day earlier that the death toll was 5,848.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

In Iran, protests began on December 28, 2025, led by merchants at the Grand Bazaar in Tehran, following the rapid depreciation of the local currency against foreign currencies and the worsening of economic problems, and soon spread across the country.

Following the intensification of demonstrations in the capital, Tehran, on January 8, authorities imposed restrictions on internet access due to the incidents that occurred.

In a statement dated January 21, based on data from the Forensic Medicine Organization, the Iranian Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs announced that 3,117 people, including security forces and civilians, had lost their lives during the protests.

While it was stated that 2,427 of these individuals were security personnel and civilians killed by "armed terrorist groups," no details were shared regarding the 690 people.

Despite statements that the demonstrations have ended, the Virginia-based HRANA continues to update the death and detention figures, claiming that new cases have been verified.
