Tensions remain high in the UK: 1,000 more police officers deployed ahead of the weekend
The UK is taking a series of new measures to prevent social unrest that is likely to flare up again over the weekend. Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds stated in his remarks on the matter that 1,000 new police officers have been deployed across the country ahead of the weekend.
As 1,000 additional specialist police officers are deployed against racist riots expected to resume in the UK over the weekend, the government has announced that it is considering tightening regulations on social media companies following incidents fueled by disinformation.
Following the killing of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed event in Southport on July 29, the identity of the murder suspect was falsely reported on social media as an Islamist immigrant, which triggered riots in various cities and towns. However, it was later learned that the attacker was born in Wales.
ATTACKS ON HOTELS HOUSING ASYLUM SEEKERS AND MOSQUES
While racist attacks were mostly directed at Muslims and immigrants, windows of hotels housing asylum seekers were smashed and stones were thrown at mosques.
More than 480 people have been arrested since the end of last month for their involvement in attacks on Muslims, immigrants, other locations, police, and passersby.
1,000 MORE POLICE OFFICERS ON DUTY
Cabinet Office Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds told Sky News that 1,000 extra specialist police officers have been deployed across the country ahead of the weekend.
Thomas-Symonds also stated that the government will review the framework of the Online Safety Act, which regulates the responsibilities of social media companies regarding content that incites violence or hatred.
The law in question was passed in October, but it is not expected to come into force before next year due to the consultation process. Regarding the law, Thomas-Symonds said, "We are prepared to make changes if necessary."
