Thousands march in Athens for Alexis

In Athens, the capital of Greece, clashes broke out between police and protesters at the end of one of two marches held to mark the anniversary of the killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who lost his life at the age of 16 due to police gunfire in 2008.

CLASHES BETWEEN PROTESTERS AND POLICE

A memorial march for Grigoropoulos, organized by students who gathered in the center of Athens at noon, ended peacefully. However, during a second demonstration in the capital in the evening, which was attended by thousands, a group in the Exarcheia district set trash bins on fire and built barricades on the road. Clashes occurred between police and the protesters.

DETENTIONS REPORTED

Alexandros Grigoropoulos lost his life at the age of 16 on December 6, 2008, as a result of fire opened by police. Demonstrations have been held in Athens for years following Grigoropoulos's death.
