Threat to Turkey from African country

Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who has remained in the spotlight in recent weeks due to his social media statements, drew backlash for posts he made about Turkey in early April. General Kainerugaba's demands included a request for 1 billion dollars from Turkey and, according to allegations, a request for Turkey's most beautiful woman as a wife. After widespread backlash, Kainerugaba deleted these posts, but rather than de-escalating the tension, he has returned to the agenda with new threats.

In a message posted on his social media account this morning, Kainerugaba stated, "I will be done with Turkey soon... They must hand over Lumbuye to us immediately. Otherwise, I will expel their useless ambassador!" In a subsequent post, he was seen using insulting language toward Turks. He reiterated his challenge by saying, "I am not afraid of them, they should be afraid of us."

WHO IS LUMBUYE AND WHY IS HE WANTED?

Fred Kajubi Lumbuye, whose extradition Kainerugaba is demanding, is a figure known for his criticisms of the government in Uganda and his opposition stance. Lumbuye, who applied for political asylum in Turkey in 2013, faces more than 20 charges and prison sentences in Uganda. After settling in Turkey, Lumbuye continued his opposition activities from there, and in 2021, he was deported to Uganda by the Presidency of Migration Management after being detained in Turkey.

However, there has been no news of Lumbuye for about five years. While his supporters suggest he may have been killed by the government in Uganda, Muhoozi Kainerugaba claimed in his latest statement that Lumbuye is still in Turkey. This situation has made the course of events even more complicated.

These outbursts toward Turkey have drawn attention both in Ankara and in the international community. HDP Kocaeli Deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu submitted a parliamentary question to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey regarding Lumbuye's fate. Meanwhile, Lumbuye's lawyers have applied to the Ugandan High Court to have him found "dead or alive," claiming that their client is being held in illegal detention in Uganda.
