Three political parties in Germany bid farewell to X citing disinformation

Political parties in Germany have taken a step regarding social media. The Social Democratic Party (SPD), a partner in the coalition government, along with the opposition Green Party and The Left, have decided to leave the US-based social media platform X, citing an excessive amount of disinformation as part of a joint action. The parties stated that they have deactivated their corporate accounts and that their new social media presence will be on the Bluesky platform. The parties also plan to recommend that their members and organizations leave X as well.

"X HAS BEEN DRAGGED INTO CHAOS IN RECENT YEARS"

The SPD, the Green Party, and The Left announced their decision to leave in a message posted on X. The statement read, "X has been dragged into chaos in recent years. Instead of political debate, X is increasingly promoting disinformation."

Announcing their decision to withdraw from X with a simultaneous post using the hashtag #WirverlassenX (We are leaving X), it was reported that the official accounts of the SPD, the Green Party, and The Left, as well as the personal accounts of their prominent representatives, will be affected by the decision to leave.

US billionaire Elon Musk purchased the social media platform, then known as Twitter, in October 2022 and changed its name to X. In recent years, German political parties have repeatedly brought the issue of leaving X to the agenda. It is noted that Musk's support for right-wing populist movements in Germany and his relationship with US President Donald Trump were also influential in the decision to leave.
