Trump administration cancels 83 percent of USAID programs

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a statement regarding the 90-day review initiated by the Donald Trump administration into foreign aid, which had been paused to evaluate its alignment with U.S. foreign policy.

Rubio announced that 83 percent of programs under the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) were canceled after a six-week review. Rubio stated, "The 5,200 canceled programs spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve—and in some cases harmed—the core national interests of the United States," adding that the remaining approximately 1,000 programs will now be managed "more effectively" by the State Department and in consultation with Congress.

Rubio also thanked the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), saying, "Thanks to DOGE and our staff who worked very long hours to carry out this overdue and historic reform."
