Trump barred from ballot in another state: 'Insurrectionists cannot run for office'

Following the states of Colorado and Maine, it has been decided that Donald Trump cannot be a presidential candidate in the state of Illinois. In Illinois, a judge ruled that Trump played a role in the insurrection that took place in the capital during the 2021 elections, and therefore, according to the constitution, he cannot be a presidential candidate. According to the ruling, even if Trump is nominated by the Republicans, votes cast for him will be considered invalid. 

Judge Tracie Porter overturned the decision made by the Illinois State Board of Elections a month ago, which had allowed Trump to participate in the election. According to documents that Fox News claims to have obtained from the court, the judge sent a letter stating that the board should change its decision, otherwise, votes cast for Trump would be invalidated. According to the report, the judge emphasized in her letter that 'insurrectionists cannot participate in elections.'

Porter cited the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as the basis for the decision. According to the 14th Amendment, individuals who have committed the crime of 'insurrection' against the government cannot hold public office or return to public offices they previously held. 

Previously, state courts in Colorado and Maine had issued similar rulings following lawsuits filed there. However, the decision in Illinois was not made because Trump was sued. Because the objections made to the State Board of Elections a month ago were rejected, Judge Porter sent a letter to the board on Wednesday, February 28, requesting that they change their decision. 

According to a CNN report, Porter stayed her decision for a short time and granted Trump time to appeal. 

Trump had previously taken the decisions made in Maine and Colorado to the U.S. Supreme Court. According to reports in U.S. media, the Supreme Court is expected to overturn the decisions made regarding Trump.
